BOLIVAR, Mo. â The ±«Óătv Department of Music will present âA Potpourri of Wind Musicâ at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 4, in Pike Auditorium on the Bolivar campus.
The ±«Óătv Wind Symphony, along with compositions performed by woodwind, brass and percussion chamber groups, will feature works by Schostakovich, Dello Joio, Whitacre and Chance.
The Wind Symphony music for this performance depicts a variety of styles and emotions. Two works by Shostakovich serve as âbookends,â opening with the light and effervescent âDance Iâ from Jazz Suite no. 2 and concluding with âFolk Dances,â a collection of Russian folk songs combined into one composition.
Dello Joioâs âScenes from âThe Louvreââ covers the period of the famous Paris museumâs development during the Renaissance with music based on themes from composers of that period. âOctoberâ is a composition intended to evoke a serene and peaceful musical representation of the composerâs favorite month.
âSomething about the crisp autumn air and the subtle changes in light always make me a little sentimental, and as I started to sketch I felt that same quiet beauty in the writing,â composer Eric Whitacre writes.
Also on the program, which is free and open to the public, is âIncantation and Dance,â the band composition written by John Barnes Chance while he was composer-in-residence with the Ford Foundation Young Composers Project in 1960.
