BOLIVAR, Mo. — The ±«Óãtv Fencing Club recently competed in the MFG University of Central Missouri tournament in Warrensburg, with William Dahl collecting ±«Óãtv’s first medal in tournament play.
The club, in its 10th year of existence and second year of competition, took eight competitors – five veterans and three rookies – to the tournament. Events competitors participated in included: Mixed foil, Mixed epee, Mixed Saber and Beginners foil. Mixed divisions are open to everyone over the age of 15. The beginners division is open only to fencers who have been fencing for less than one year.
In competitions, an electrical scoring system which includes metal-woven jackets, special blades, a scorebox and wires, helps take the guesswork out of “who hit who when.â€
Dahl tied for third place in the Beginners foil division to become the first ±«Óãtv fencer to win a medal.
Club advisor Dr. Steve Lesh, professor and chair of physical therapy, said the “earned individual medal was a team milestone to build upon for future success.â€
The ±«Óãtv Fencing Club is a group of students and community members, who have Intramural Gym memberships, that comes together and learns the art of swordplay that is fencing. Members are taught the styles of foil, epee and saber.
The organization has grown from 3-5 participants in 2015 to now having 12 active members, who compete with the Midwest Fencing Guild, an association of schools which includes the University of Missouri, Saint Louis University, the University of Missouri of Science & Technology and the University of Central Missouri. The MFG is dedicated to teaching and promoting the sport of fencing among its members and respective communities.
